Sapphire, the precious gemstone, belonging to the corundum mineral family is the birthstone for those born in September. Corundum derives from the Sanskrit word “kuruvindam” . Sapphire Blue is the colour commonly associated with a natural Sapphire although they occur in all colours of the rainbow and are mined in India, Burma, Ceylon, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil and Africa. The Kashmir sapphire is considered the benchmark of a quality sapphire. Since 2002, Canada has been a new player in sapphire exploration. Sapphire findings in Canada with the blue, pink and yellow sapphire have been cited in The Beluga Sapphire property owned by True North Gems , located on southeastern Baffin Island, Nunavut, near the town of Kimmirut.
