August 2007 was a month when the world heard about the ancient diamonds over 4 billion years old, seen unearthed and trapped inside crystals of Zircon in Jack Hills region, Western Australia. These zircon grains, the oldest fragments of Earth’s crust safeguarding precious ancient diamonds hold the secrets about the historical conditions outlining the early birth years of our planet.
There is a spiritual link between man and diamond and the metaphysics of existence being primeval carbon, the fundamental building block of material in living organisms. The Buddhist text the Anguttara Nikaya as well as the Sanskrit text Arthashastra placed an early written record of diamonds and its hidden aura with divinity. It is said “Virtually all carbon atoms, the ones in a diamond or a tree or you, came from the stars” (

The early records also indicate that diamonds were first discovered and mined in India where they were appreciated in its natural octahedral state. This tradition or taboo kept the diamond uncut and only polished to reveal lustre and discard foreign debris. This look lasted well into the Middle ages after which the birth of the cut and polished diamond occurred continuing to evolve even today into the many different cuts and facets permeating the brilliance of fire and the play of light. In India the art of the uncut diamond in jewellery has lingered in spite of the demand for the value and appeal of the ideal-cut diamond. Today’s fashion trends are moving toward the natural and with it the uncut diamond is making a comeback. We saw the look in the L’Wren Scott designed diamond cuff bracelet with uncut diamonds worn by Nicole Kidman in the 2007 Oscars and in creations by the Company Diamond in the Rough http://www.diamondintheroughjewelry.com/. Other companies like Rough Diamond World http://roughdiamondworld.com/ are providing sources of uncut rough diamonds.

Digitalism Magazine highlights Bagga Jewellers, their collection displays a wide variety of pieces of uncut combined with single cut diamond pieces bringing back the natural beauty of diamonds.
