According to the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted in 2006 for Hallmark Cards Canada, it was found three-quarters of Canadians (74%) celebrate Valentine’s Day. Interestingly enough, Hallmark’s “Wild Romance Survey” found Canadians not merely a romantic breed by large, but romantic with wild animal instincts lurking in their hearts. Survey findings reveal that this upcoming February 14,2007 Valentine’s day 2007, urbandebristypepadcom.gif
” 39% of couples who celebrate this event are planning to
have a wildly romantic Valentine’s Day. The national average was exceeded in
Quebec, where a stunning 47% of these hot-blooded Canadians are hoping to run
wild. Even 35 per cent of single Canadians are going to be hunting for love on
February 14th. This optimism runs highest among males planning to go on the
prowl (49% vs. 25% of women).”

If we celebrated Valentine’s Day everyday of our lives, perhaps D.H Lawrence would be correct when he predicted,”After our industrial civilization has broken and the civilization of touch has begun, war will cease, there will be no more wars.”(Source D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930)Future War)

The origins of Valentine’s Day have many legends, but one that seems to be predominant is Valentine ,the priest who lived in 3rd century Rome under Emperor Claudius 11. The times then were not very different from today, 2007, where war and conflict dominated the pursuits of man. The Emperor Claudius 11 banned marriages and engagements in fear that men would be preoccupied with love and not have the instinct to fight for war as soldiers to conquer and protect the land from infiltrating conquests.

Valentine the priest refused to abide to Claudius and driven by his Christian heart continued to marry couples in secrecy. When Claudius came to hear about this, he ordered that Valentine was to be punished by death and thus on February 14, 270 A.D Valentine was stoned and beheaded. The spilled blood for the love of the Christian belief designated Valentine as Saint Valentine and Love prevailed over the demands of War,and that day to be celebrated came to be St. Valentine’s Day.

In the West, symbols of love and human culture were once very influenced and guided by mythological lessons from the Gods and Goddesses. Valentine’s day is probably the last remnants of mythological symbols at play.

Cupid , the famous symbol of love and Valentine’s day,is the son of Venus, Roman Goddess of love, busy piercing the hearts of two people as he flies in the air with his wings and shoots his bow and arrow.

The origin of Cupid’s association with love all originated in a mythological lesson of love and jealousy. The love story originated with Cupid falling in love with the beautiful Psyche, a mortal maiden. Venus, Cupid’s mother who was very jealous of Psyche’s eternal beauty forced Cupid the God of love to make Psyche fall in love with an ugly beastly man. Cupid laying eyes on Psyche’s beauty, disobeyed his mother and having a pure heart, instead fell in love and married Psyche. wwwpalettesofvisioncom.jpeg Photo Source www.palettesofvision.com

Venus’ jealousy of Psyche’s beauty led her to put Psyche through tests of endurance. All Psyche wanted was to be the devoted wife of Cupid and to love him forever. When Psyche was told by Venus not to open the box containing “beauty”, Psyche failed the test and instead opened it. The box did not contain “beauty” but a death-like “sleep”. Psyche lay dead and motionless. Cupid seeing this could not bear Psyche punished to sleep. He convinced his mother of Psyche’s great love for him and together they forgave Psyche’s disobedience for opening the box.

Venus’ jealousy was overpowered by Cupid, the lesson being Love is to give and forgive without jealousy. As Goddess and God of Love, Venus and Cupid ruled by deciding to grant Psyche the status of immortality and made her a god.

With this note we continue to glorify love with Valentine’s Day February 14, 2007 and remnants of guiding legendary mythologies. As Joseph Campbell said, ” One cannot predict the next mythology any more than one can predict tonight’s dream; for mythology is not an ideology. It is not something projected from the brain, but something experienced from the heart, from recognitions of identities behind or within the appearances of nature, perceiving with love a “thou” where there would have been otherwise only an “it”.”
