As part of Digitalism Magazine’s Whiteflash Campaign, Canadian Diamonds that are mined, cut and polished in Canada is the focus of this issue.
A diamond is Canadian if it is mined in Canada. For those consumers who want to purchase a Canadian Diamond which is mined , cut and polished in its entirety in the country of Canada, there are only a certain small percentage of Canadian Diamonds available to them in the market.

Diamonds and engagement rings have always been customary to the North American Bridal tradition for weddings. Increasingly around the world, diamond engagement rings are gaining popularity. What is also changing is consumer ethical preferences in diamonds. Conventionally the quality of diamonds have always been graded by quality and the old rule of considering the 4C’s has been the benchmark namely, CUT, CARAT, COLOUR and CLARITY. Now there is the FIFTH C, The Canadian Diamond. What is very interesting about this new dimension is grading diamonds based on mans’s ethical ideals.
On January 22, 1964 The Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, O.B.E., M.P., Prime Minister of Canada, gifted the United States of America with a Maple Leaf Diamond accented Brooch.

Little did anyone know then that symbolically the Canadian Maple Leaf would indeed represent Canada for being one of the worlds largest producers of diamonds. Little did anyone know that the future of the Canadian Shield, the bearer of the worlds largest craton and diamond bearing kimberlites would be revealing shining World Class Diamonds ethically approved and highly sought after in the world market.

The Canadian Government Certified Canadian Diamond is represented by a symbol and is accompanied by a Canadian Diamond Certification as shown below.

The certification ensures that the diamond was not only mined in Canada but also cut, and polished in Canada. Canada is a pioneer in that it is the first country to offer a government certification program, allowing a tracking process available to the consumer from the chain of events of mining, cutting, polishing, designing and retailing with each event occurring in Canada. Not all Canadian Diamonds are cut and polished in Canada.
The brands under which this Total Canadian Diamond Process occurs is branded by the Polar Bear and Polar Ice.

These two brands have become internationally sought after because they are mined, polished and cut in Canada.

Their popularity is also based on them being  ethically approved to be “clean diamonds” not “blood diamonds”  and are ideally represented to be conflict free diamonds. All Canadian diamonds in general have had an increase in popularity eversince consumer demand increased for conflict free diamonds.

Amnesty International had raised concerns to conflict diamonds which were smuggled out of Angola and Sierra Leone for the purpose of financing abusive and underground military actions in Africa, money laundering and affiliations to terrorist groups. The value of an ethically graded diamond thus came to be born and has been increasingly important to the ethically conscious consumer.

The Polar Bear and The Polar Ice are brands from The Yellowknife mines with the Polar Bear having a polar bear signature, and the Polar Ice a maple leaf etched into the girdle of the diamond along with the government certificate number
